Client Spotlight: Kala Maxym

The moment I heard about Kala Maxym’s company, Five Senses Tastings, I knew I had to work with her.  Anyone who knows me well knows I can’t resist the combination of good food, good wine, beautiful music and a wonderful story to tell it all.   Too often we rush through life, we should be taking the time to savor each of our senses.

Kala was born and raised in Germany and the UK, moving to the US at age 14. Her professional background includes working as a Senior Program Analyst with the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, as a gemologist, in the localization technology space, and as professional opera singer throughout the U.S., Europe, and South America, including for three Presidents. Her favorite role? Queen Nefertiti in Philip Glass’s “Akhnaten.”

Kala is also the Founder of Five Senses Tastings, a boutique special experience company that elevates guests’ sensory experiences through the purposeful and meaningful engagement of their five senses. Partnering with world-class musicians, chefs, sommeliers, chocolatiers, and other flavor artists, she composes full-sensory events in LA and surrounding areas that weave together a diverse and global narrative guided by music and enhanced by flavor.

Kala holds a BA in Political Science from Barnard College of Columbia University and an MMus in Opera Performance from The Boston Conservatory. She is a certified Spanish-to-English translator, a California Wine Appellation Specialist, and is WSET Level II certified. Kala is a former bone marrow donor.

I am really excited to be launching a new partnership with a cocktail artist called “Song and Tonic.” This is a guided tasting experience that pairs classic music with classic cocktails. As we mix, shake, and stir, musicians play melodies and sounds that emulate the ingredients – their origin and their role within the cocktail – and explore their relation to the full piece of music. As the ingredients are layered one upon the other, so are the instruments and melodies. By deconstructing both song and cocktail, we are able to explore each part independently and then, when in a heightened sensory state, fully appreciate the completed song and cocktail as all the pieces finally come together in harmony. Before that, we’ll be at Jo Malone in Beverly Hills on November 16th for a really special event featuring two of their fantastic scents. And I’m also excited to be returning to V Wine Room in West Hollywood for an event on December 13th.

Tabloid magazines … but only while waiting for a plane.

Too many to list to be honest…

About 18 months… definitely long enough to fall in love and call it home!

Be an opera singer or work for the foreign service or as an interpreter at the UN.

Both… I have cats who act like dogs so it all works out.

A cubicle and a mean boss.

Not sure what it looks like but there is music, wine, cheese, and chocolate. Since those are the things I get to work with on a daily basis, I guess I get to live a little part of it on earth, too!

Hopefully my first trip to Asia for New Years!
